Have your say to improve strata this OctoberThe popularity of strata living continues to grow in Western Australia with an estimated quarter of the state’s population living in one of 340,000 strata properties across nearly 70,000 schemes, and with thousands more who work in one. While these strata communities are diverse in form - spanning residential, retail, commercial, industrial and mixed-use developments - they all share the same governing legislation. Now is the time for Western Australians to have their say on how that legislation is working for them. The State Government is inviting anyone with an interest in improving WA’s strata law (the Strata Titles Act 1985) to provide feedback during its current five-year legislative review, with its phase one public consultation now underway at landgate.wa.gov.au until 31 October. Collaboration puts City of Swan Aboriginal Place Names on the mapLandgate has launched Place Names Maali, a reconciliation, truth telling, and Aboriginal language revival project delivered in collaboration with the City of Swan and Moodjar. The project includes an interactive online Aboriginal Place Names map containing the decoded names and pronunciations of 18 geographical locations within the City of Swan, reflecting the spirit and history of the area and fostering a sense of belonging within the local community. The Place Names Maali project was officially launched today by Minster for Lands, the Hon. John Carey MLA at Midland NAIDOC, an event that brings the community together to celebrate the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the City of Swan and more broadly throughout Western Australia. The Launch concluded an extensive cultural engagement process facilitated by Dr Len Collard from Moodjar, in consultation with the Maali miy (The Voice of Swan decoding group) made up of local Noongar Elders, Traditional Owners and representatives of the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation Cultural Advice Committee. Incorporating the language, historical and cultural knowledge gained from this process, the Aboriginal Place Names map features the locations, a brief video-history and the Aboriginal pronunciations of each geographic feature or place within the City of Swan. By delivering this collaborative project, Landgate is continuing its journey towards reconciliation while enriching the community’s appreciation of the landscape that surrounds them.
